LIFE AT CAMP

Spend 9–12 weeks living and working at camp in the USA!  Most placements run from June to mid-August, but if you’re free from May to late August, even better – more camps can match with you.  So… What Is a Camp Counsellor Anyway? In short: you’re the magic that makes camp unforgettable. Camp Counsellors are the heartbeat of camp life, making sure kids have the time of their lives all summer long. There are two main types of roles you might take on: Activity Leader or General Counsellor. Here’s the lowdown:

Activity Leader
Got a skill you love—like football, dance, archery or kayaking? This one’s for you.
As an Activity Leader, you’ll run sessions in your chosen activity, helping kids build confidence while having a blast. You’ll plan fun, engaging lessons and get stuck into camp life too. You might also live in a cabin with your campers and join in on all sorts of other activities you’ve never tried before!

General Counsellor
Think of this role like being a big brother or sister. You’ll be living in a cabin with a group of campers, helping them through daily routines—meals, free time, and getting them to and from activities.
You’ll build strong bonds, be a role model, and probably jump in on activities yourself. You might even get the chance to plan games, lead events, or try your hand at something new.

Camp Types
We work with hundreds of camps to find the perfect match for you. Here’s what’s out there:  Traditional Camps: The classic summer camp vibe – cabins by the lake, overnight stays, heaps of activities like sports, watersports, arts, and more. We also access a number of  Special Needs, Single-gender camps and Faith-Based Camps.

THE EXPERIENCE

Your Summer Camp Adventure with Ultimate Travel
Every summer camp is unique—different locations, themes, and people. While there’s no set itinerary, here’s a solid idea of what your journey will look like:

BEFORE YOU DEPART FOR CAMP

Lock in your role as a camp leader before you leave Australia. That includes getting your J-1 visa sorted. Don’t stress—we’ve helped thousands get approved and we’ll guide you through it step-by-step to make it as smooth and fast as possible.

 ARRIVAL TO SUMMER CAMP

Once you land at the airport nearest to your camp, someone from the camp crew will be there to greet you. If that’s not possible, you’ll get all the info you need to get there by public transport—and yep, you’ll be reimbursed.

You’ll arrive about a week before the campers do. This gives you time to settle in, meet your fellow leaders, and get to know the camp setup and your role inside out.

 Camp Life

Every camp is a little different, but here’s what a typical day might look like:

7:50 AM – Rise and shine! Kick the day off with the traditional flagpole gathering.
8:00 AM – Breakfast time in the dining hall with the crew.
9:15 AM – Lead your first activity of the day with a fresh group of campers.
10:30 AM – Round two! Another crew of campers joins your activity.
12:00 PM – Lunch break. Refuel and recharge.
1:00 PM – Rest hour. Yes, naps are a thing. And they’re glorious.
2:00 PM – Let the afternoon fun begin—lake time, games, or just soaking up the sunshine.
3:15 PM – Cabin activities with your bunk group—great for bonding and downtime.
5:45 PM – Second flagpole of the day—bring it home strong.
6:00 PM – Dinner time! Everyone’s earned it by now.
8:30–10:00 PM – Lights out for the campers. Time for you to chill.

You’ll usually get one day off per week—around 6 days in total. Most people keep it low-key during camp and save their big adventures for after.

 AFTER CAMP TRAVEL

Once camp wraps, your USA adventure is just getting started.

With at least $2,250 USD in your pocket (for a standard 9-week camp) and your J-1 visa still valid—you’ve got time and cash to explore.

Not keen to travel solo? No problem. Link up with mates for a proper American road trip!  You can even join one of our epic post-camp group trips across the USA.

Whatever your style—city hopping, national parks, or just eating your way across the States—we’re here to make it easy. You’ll have support from our team throughout your journey, plus access to our 24/5 emergency line if something urgent comes up.

What types of jobs are available with AmeriCamp?

Summer camps in the U.S. run a huge range of activities, so they need staff who can teach skills like team sports (football, soccer), water sports (canoeing, sailing), outdoor activities (zip-lining, climbing), arts and crafts, horseback riding, theatre, martial arts, computers, and more. When you apply, you’ll need to show what skills you can teach and talk about any childcare experience you have.

How old do you need to be to join AmeriCamp?

You must be 18 years old by the 1st January of your program year.

How long is the AmeriCamp program?

Most camps run for about eight weeks, plus one week of orientation. Camp typically runs from June to August. After camp ends, you can travel in the U.S. until 31 September.

What is a J-1 Visa and do I need one?

Yes! You’ll need a J-1 Camp Counselor visa to work at camp. It’s part of the U.S. Exchange Visitor Program, designed to allow cultural and educational exchanges.

Do I need specific qualifications to be a counsellor?

No formal qualifications are required, but camps look for skills and certifications in lifeguarding, waterskiing, sailing, boat driving, climbing, outdoor adventure, fine arts, stage crew, theater, gymnastics, archery and more. Enthusiasm, childcare experience, or relevant experience are also great!

Do I need childcare experience?

It’s not mandatory, but a genuine interest in working with children is essential.

When do I need to be available?

You should be available from around 1st June to 15th August. Being available earlier can boost your chances of getting placed.

How do I apply to AmeriCamp?

Just hit the "APPLY NOW" button on the AmeriCamp website to get started. You can express interest or pay your deposit straight away.

When do 2027 Applications open?

Applications for 2027 are now OPEN! We are so excited to start the process and get all you legends to Camp in 2027!

Will I need to do an interview?

Yes, you'll have a casual 30–40 minute video chat via Google Meets with a Brand Ambassador.

What do my program fees cover?

Fees include your application processing, access to camp placements, visa sponsorship (DS-2019 form), SEVIS receipt, and medical insurance while you’re in the U.S.

How do I book my flights?

You’ll book your own flights after securing your visa. Camps will give you instructions on arrival times and locations.

Do I have to accept my first camp offer?

No, but most people do. If it’s not the right fit, AmeriCamp will work with you to find another placement — being flexible helps!

How do I apply for a J-1 visa?

After you're placed, our fee guides you through the visa process step-by-step, including issuing your DS-2019 form. It is not possible to obtain the J-1 Visa directly to the US Embassy.

Does AmeriCamp provide full travel insurance?

Medical insurance is included. For extras like trip cancellations, missed flights, or lost luggage, you should arrange extra travel insurance separately.
