PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Join us in transforming educational and community spaces to create better learning and living environments for local children and families in Cambodia.

On this volunteer program you will work alongside local coordinators and community members on small-scale construction and renovation projects that directly benefit schools and local infrastructure.

Your work will primarily take place at a local school that supports children from underprivileged backgrounds. While the school already provides a safe and welcoming environment, ongoing improvements are needed to support a growing community.

Depending on the needs of the community at the time, volunteers may also assist with improvements in nearby villages or community facilities. Each week can be slightly different depending on the project priorities, meaning your experience will always feel meaningful and hands-on.

No construction experience is required. Tasks are suitable for beginners and volunteers will always work under the supervision of local coordinators and experienced team members.

What Will I Actually Be Doing?

Typical volunteer tasks may include:

  • Assisting with the construction or renovation of classrooms
  • Painting and repairing school buildings
  • Building or improving walkways and playground areas
  • Supporting the development of sanitation facilities such as toilets
  • Landscaping and improving outdoor community spaces
Is This Ethical and Legitimate?

Yes. This volunteer project works directly with local community partners in Siem Reap who identify genuine infrastructure needs within schools and surrounding communities.

Projects are designed to support existing community initiatives rather than replace local workers. Volunteers assist with labour, maintenance and improvement work that would otherwise take significantly longer to complete due to limited resources.

Local coordinators manage all projects and ensure work is carried out safely, responsibly and in line with community priorities. Volunteers provide additional support that helps improve facilities used daily by local families and children.

EXAMPLE ITINERARY

This Cambodia Community Construction Volunteer Program includes an airport pick up on Sundays from SAI (Siem Reap Angkor International Airport).

To join the program as scheduled, you should arrive on Sunday between 06:00 and 20:00 so you can catch the included transfer from the airport to Siem Reap. If you arrive on Saturday, you will need to book one additional night of accommodation before the program begins.

Please make sure you provide your arrival date, flight number and arrival time in advance so we can organise your airport transfer and prepare for your arrival.

Your volunteer program officially starts on Monday, however your accommodation begins from Sunday so you can settle in, meet fellow volunteers and get ready for the week ahead.

Sunday Arrival

Arrive into Siem Reap and meet your transfer as part of the scheduled Sunday airport pick up service. Once you arrive at the accommodation, you can settle into your room, meet the local team and relax after your journey. This is a good chance to get familiar with the guesthouse, the local surroundings and the other volunteers joining the program.

Monday Orientation and Introduction

Your first full day begins with an introduction meeting where you will go through house rules, important expectations, health and safety guidance and practical information for your stay. The local team will also explain how to look after your important documents and settle into the accommodation comfortably.

You will then be introduced to Cambodian culture through Khmer Do’s and Don’ts, local customs and basic Khmer language lessons to help you feel more confident and respectful in your new environment.

During the day, you will take a guided tour around the compound and local area so you know where to find nearby shops and essentials. If needed, the team can also assist you with arranging a local SIM card.

You will also receive an introduction to the project itself and visit the construction site or community location where you will be volunteering. This gives you a clear understanding of your role and how your work will support the local community throughout the week.

Tuesday to Friday Volunteer Work

After breakfast each morning, you will head out to the project site with your coordinator and fellow volunteers. Depending on local priorities, this may be at a school, community building, local homes or another shared community space.

Each day starts with a briefing from the local team so you understand the tasks ahead and how the work contributes to the wider project. You can expect to volunteer for approximately 4 to 5 hours per day, with a break for lunch either back at the accommodation or near the work site.

Your tasks may vary depending on the needs of the project, but can include construction support, renovation work, painting, simple repairs, building furniture, improving pathways, landscaping or helping to develop community facilities.

Every task is designed to make a practical difference, helping improve the spaces used by local children, families and the wider community. No two weeks are exactly the same, which means your experience will remain varied, hands-on and rewarding.

Typical Daily Flow

Morning: Breakfast at the guesthouse followed by travel to the project site.

Midday: Construction and renovation work with guidance from the local coordinator.

Lunch: Lunch break either near the project site or back at the accommodation.

Afternoon: Continue project work or return to the accommodation for free time depending on the day’s schedule.

Evenings and Free Time

Evenings are generally free for you to relax, socialise with other volunteers or explore more of Siem Reap. You may choose to visit local markets, enjoy the café scene, head into town by bike or tuk-tuk, or simply unwind at the accommodation after a rewarding day on the project.

On weekends, volunteers usually have free time to explore the area further. Popular options include visiting Angkor Wat, local temples, floating villages, markets and other cultural attractions around Siem Reap.
