PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Join our Elephant Conservation Volunteer Program in Chiang Mai and spend time working alongside rescued elephants in a peaceful jungle sanctuary in northern Thailand. This unique volunteer experience allows you to support the daily care of elephants that have been rescued from exploitation, labour, or tourism industries.

Located just outside Chiang Mai, the sanctuary provides a safe and ethical environment where elephants can live freely and naturally. Unlike traditional elephant attractions, the focus here is on welfare, rehabilitation and conservation. There is no elephant riding or performance activities – the wellbeing of the animals always comes first.

Volunteers assist the sanctuary team and experienced mahouts (elephant caretakers) with daily tasks that support the health and happiness of the elephants. By working closely with these animals and their caretakers, participants gain valuable insight into elephant behaviour, conservation challenges and the cultural importance of elephants in Thailand.

What Will I Actually Be Doing?

During your stay you will participate in hands-on activities that support the sanctuary and the elephants that live there. Tasks are practical, engaging and designed to help maintain the elephants’ natural environment.

  • Preparing food and feeding the elephants
  • Bathing elephants in the river and helping with mud baths
  • Cleaning and maintaining elephant living areas
  • Preparing herbal medicine and nutritional supplements for elephants
  • Walking alongside elephants through the sanctuary
  • Observing elephant behaviour and learning from experienced mahouts

Volunteers typically assist with conservation tasks for several hours each day, working alongside the sanctuary staff in a supportive team environment.

Ethical Elephant Conservation

This program works with a sanctuary committed to ethical elephant care and conservation. Many of the elephants have been rescued from industries such as logging, tourism or street begging. The sanctuary provides a safe space where they can live naturally and recover from past hardships.

Volunteers support the sanctuary’s mission by assisting caretakers and helping maintain a healthy environment for the elephants. Education is also a key part of the experience, allowing participants to understand the challenges facing elephants in Thailand and the importance of responsible wildlife tourism.

Where Will I Live and What Is Daily Life Like?

Volunteers stay in shared accommodation near the sanctuary, surrounded by the peaceful natural landscapes of northern Thailand. The environment is relaxed and social, allowing participants from around the world to connect and share their experiences.

Meals are provided throughout the program and typically include traditional Thai dishes as well as simple international options. Daily life combines volunteering, learning about elephant conservation and enjoying the beauty of Chiang Mai’s countryside.

During free time, volunteers can relax at the sanctuary, explore nearby villages, or travel into Chiang Mai city to experience its temples, markets and famous street food.
