Please note this is a partner-operated tour run by one of our trusted local operators. While it is booked through ULTIMATE, operational details, guiding style and accommodation set-up may differ slightly from an ULTIMATE-operated group trip.

ABOUT YOU

This trip is ideal for travellers who want to experience the best of the Northern Territory in a short amount of time, without taking on anything too extreme. It suits adventurous travellers who enjoy the outdoors, wildlife, swimming and cultural experiences, but prefer a more relaxed pace than some of Australia’s more demanding overland tours. A moderate level of fitness is still required, as there are uneven surfaces, steps, rocky areas and short walks involved throughout the journey.

You may be travelling solo, with a friend, or as part of a bigger Australia trip, and this experience is perfect for those wanting to explore Kakadu, Katherine and Litchfield with the ease of a guided itinerary. This tour is not suitable for children aged 7 years and under, and it is important that travellers are comfortable visiting remote areas where facilities and medical access can be limited. If you are after nature, wildlife, cultural insight and unforgettable scenery rather than luxury hotels or nightlife, this trip will be a great fit.

TRAVEL STYLE

This is a participatory small group adventure with a comfortable camping set-up. You’ll stay in permanent eco tents with shared facilities, giving you an outback experience while still enjoying a solid level of comfort. Guests are expected to join in with simple group tasks such as helping prepare meals and cleaning up afterwards. These shared tasks are all part of the journey and help bring the group together.

Transport is by all-terrain vehicle, built for Top End conditions and ideal for reaching some of the region’s most spectacular natural attractions. The tour begins with pick-up from your Darwin accommodation at approximately 6:30am on day 1 and returns to Darwin at around 4:00pm on day 4. As this tour travels through remote national park regions, itineraries may occasionally change without notice due to weather, road conditions, mechanical issues or cultural commitments from Traditional Owners. If you have any medical conditions or take medication, please provide full details in advance, as medical facilities in these regions are limited and can be difficult to access.

GROUP VIBE

The group vibe on this trip is relaxed, social and nature-focused. Groups are small, with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 16 travellers, so it is easy to get to know the people around you and enjoy a more personal experience with your guide. Many travellers join solo, making this a great option if you want the reassurance of group travel while still having plenty of space to enjoy the scenery at your own pace.

Expect early starts, big adventure days, shared meals and plenty of memorable moments out in nature. One moment you might be spotting crocodiles and birdlife on a wetlands cruise, and the next you’ll be floating in a clear waterhole or taking in ancient landscapes that feel untouched by time. This is less about partying and more about shared adventure, incredible scenery and the kind of travel experience that creates genuine connections.

THE ITINERARY

Day 1: Darwin to Kakadu

Today is when your Top End Adventure begins with a bright and early start at 6:30am. Your Adventure Tours guide will pick you up straight from your hostel and then get underway. Head east along the Arnhem Highway, crossing the Adelaide River towards the Corroborree Billabong. Your hour long crocodile cruise will see you spot heaps of crocs in their natural habitat – the Corroborree Billabong has the highest concentration of saltwater crocs in the entire world.

Then continue towards the beautiful Kakadu National Park. After a filling lunch check out the famous Cahill’s Crossing over the East Alligator River before headubg to Ubirr to witness some Aboriginal Rock Art – some of which is over 5000 years old!

Your purpose built and exclusive camp is located in Jabiru – Kakadu’s “capital city”

The accommodation for the next 3 nights will be in group exclusive campsites in permanent, powered tents (shared facilities)

Day 2: Kakadu National Park

After another early start and a bit of brekky, pack up and head south through the Kakadu National Park to Barramundi Gorge. Take a 1km walk through the bush to the refreshing water hole for a dip, chill in the water under the waterfall while taking in the nature and beautiful surroundings which have been preserved for 1000s of years!

After lunch the rest of the arvo includes a picture spot at Bukbukluk Lookout, another swim in the Moline Rockhole before heading down to Katherine. This evening enjoy pizza and some drinks while watching the sunset on the camp’s sundeck overlooking the Katherine River.

Tonight stargaze around the campfire.

Day 3: Katherine Gorge

This morning, enjoy a 2-hour guided cruise in the stunning Katherine Gorge. Then make your way through the town of Katherine to our next stop, Edith Falls — an ideal spot for a picnic lunch and a refreshing swim. If you’re up for it, you can hike to one of the upper pools, or simply unwind in the spacious lower plunge pool.

We travel north along the Stuart Highway, passing through the outback towns of Adelaide River and Pine Creek, before settling in for the night at our exclusive campsite on the edge of Litchfield National Park.

Day 4: Litchfield National Park

Today is the biggest swimming day on your Top End Adventure! Explore the Litchfield National Park – so much to see and one action packed day to see it all! On the way your guide will show you a termite mound which is a staple of the local landscape. The majority of today is filled with multiple, iconic swimming spots so make sure you’ve got you swimmers and camera easily accessible!!

Swim in stunning waterholes such as Buley Rockholes, Florence Falls & Wangi Falls or just relax on the rocks and enjoy some of that Aussie sun! After lunch (and a little more swimming) start making your way back up north Darwin. You’ll return to Darwin around 3pm, have a quick chill and then visit the famous Mindil Beach Markets to pick up some souvenirs, have some international cuisine and watch the sunset with your new Top End travel mates!

The Top End Australia Tour will then finish on Day 5 at 6pm.
