VOLUNTEER ABROAD SRI LANKA
KICKSTART SRI LANKA
4 WEEK VOLUNTEER, SURF & ADVENTURE PROGRAM.
TRIP OVERVIEW
Make a real difference, learn to surf and see the best of Sri Lanka – all in one epic month. Kickstart Sri Lanka starts with 2 weeks volunteering on the south coast near Galle, helping protect endangered sea turtles, caring for rescued dogs, supporting local kindergartens or coaching sport with local kids – and you can mix it up, like a week with the turtles and a week with the dogs. Then swap your project shirt for a boardie and spend a week surfing and doing yoga in Ahangama, before finishing with a 7 day Culture & Adventure Tour – safari in Yala, the famous Ella train ride, Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth and the climb up Sigiriya Lion Rock. Accommodation, most meals, training and in-country support from our local team are all sorted, so you can focus on the experience.

Good to Know | FAQs
What is Kickstart Sri Lanka?
A 4 week program that combines 2 weeks volunteering near Galle, a Surf & Yoga week in Ahangama and a 7 day Culture & Adventure Tour around Sri Lanka’s highlights. It’s the easiest way to volunteer, learn to surf and see the country in one trip.
Which volunteer projects can I choose?
Sea Turtle & Marine Conservation, Dog Care, Kindergarten & Social Care or Sports Coaching. You don’t have to stick to one – it’s common to combine two projects, like 1 week with the turtles and 1 week with the dogs. Other projects such as Children’s Teaching and Women’s Empowerment can be booked as separate volunteer programs – just ask us.
What does the sea turtle project involve?
At least half your time is hands-on with turtles – hatchery work, feeding, cleaning and safe hatchling releases. The rest is beach and lagoon clean-ups, mangrove planting, coral restoration (seasonal) and community awareness. Night patrols run during nesting season (December to April).
What does the dog care project involve?
You’ll work at Sri Lanka’s largest animal sanctuary, caring for up to 2,000 rescued dogs – feeding, cleaning, socialising, puppy care and helping with rehab like hydrotherapy and wheelchair therapy. An anti-rabies vaccine is strongly recommended.
What does the kindergarten project involve?
You’ll support local teachers with kids aged 3–6 – basic English, games, singing, arts & crafts and lots of care and attention. Classes run for around 3–4 hours, mostly in the mornings, plus lesson planning. Not available in December.
What does the sports coaching project involve?
You’ll help local coaches run fun, active sessions for kids aged 9–14 from rural communities around Galle. A typical week includes 2 days of football coaching, 2 days of guided swimming lessons and 1 day of community outreach – like games at local schools or sports activities at the AASHA Community Centre. Sessions run in the afternoons for around 2.5–3 hours. No coaching experience needed – just energy and a love of sport! Sports Coaching runs during set periods (currently 5 Sep–5 Dec 2026, 9 Jan–3 Apr 2027 and 3 Jul–4 Dec 2027) and is open to ages 16–45.
Can I combine two volunteer projects?
Yes! You don’t have to stick to one project for both volunteer weeks. Lots of volunteers combine two, like 1 week with the sea turtles and 1 week at the dog sanctuary. Once you book, our team will reach out to help you choose – the same project for both weeks or a combination, subject to project availability.
Do I need any experience?
No. Full orientation and project training are provided, and coordinators support you every day. You just need conversational English and a positive attitude.
How old do I need to be?
Turtle and dog care projects are 16+, sports coaching is 16–45 and kindergarten is 18–45. Ultimate trips are designed for travellers aged 18–35.
Where will I stay?
Weeks 1–2 at AASHA Beachside, our volunteer house in Unawatuna near Galle (with pool access at our second house 100m away), week 3 at a surf house in Ahangama (A/C shared room), and boutique 3-star hotels on the tour.
Are meals included?
3 meals a day during your volunteer weeks, breakfast and healthy dinners on surf week, and breakfast & lunch every day on the tour. Tour dinners are at your own cost.
Do I need to know how to surf?
Nope – surf week includes 5 lessons for beginner or intermediate surfers, plus surf guiding, theory and video analysis. Boards are included.
What documents do I need?
A CV, short motivation letter and passport copy. Projects working with children also need a police background check. You’ll also need a Sri Lanka ETA visa and travel insurance.
When is the best time to go?
Sri Lanka’s south coast is best from November to April when surf is pumping and skies are clear. Projects run most of the year – check our start dates or ask us.
How do I get there?
Fly into Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) on your Saturday start date. Shared transfers to the volunteer house run at set times on Saturdays.
