WHAT IS CAMPING ON K’GARI REALLY LIKE?
If you’re travelling the East Coast of Australia, K’gari (Fraser Island) has to be on your bucket list. Crystal-clear freshwater lakes, huge sand dunes, 4WDs cruising along the beach and nights spent camping just metres from the ocean – it’s one of those places that feels completely different from anywhere else in Australia.
But if you’re not usually a camper, you might be wondering: what is camping on K’gari actually like?
The good news? It’s probably nowhere near as scary as you’re imagining.
On our K’gari adventure, we travel with Dingo’s K’gari Adventures on their 3-day, 2-night 4WD experience.
And yes, you really do camp!
You’ll stay at a private, enclosed campsite just metres from the beach, with a large undercover communal area, kitchen facilities and power available for charging your phone. Camping equipment is provided, including a twin-share tent, sleeping bag and camp mat.
And most importantly: the tents are absolutely fine!
This isn’t luxury glamping, but that’s part of the experience. You’re on the world’s largest sand island, spending your days exploring in 4WDs and your nights camping with your group. It’s comfortable enough for a couple of nights and, once everyone is back at camp having dinner and chatting about the day, you quickly forget about missing your hostel bed.
We also provide a pillow, so you don’t need to try and squeeze one into your backpack!
What do you actually do on K’gari?
Camping is only a small part of the adventure. Most of your time is spent exploring K’gari by 4WD, including driving along the famous 75 Mile Beach and sandy inland tracks.
Your exact itinerary can change depending on tides, weather and island conditions, but a typical 3-day Dingo’s adventure looks something like this:
Day 1 – Lake McKenzie & your first night camping
After leaving Rainbow Beach, you’ll take the ferry across to K’gari and the adventure begins.
One of the biggest highlights is Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), famous for its incredibly clear freshwater and white sand. You’ll have time to swim, relax and take in one of K’gari’s most famous locations before heading to camp.
Then it’s dinner, drinks, getting to know your group and your first night sleeping on K’gari.
Day 2 – Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck & Champagne Pools
Day two is packed with some of the island’s most iconic stops.
You’ll visit Eli Creek, where you can float or walk through the beautifully clear freshwater, before stopping at the famous SS Maheno Shipwreck on 75 Mile Beach.
You’ll then continue north towards the Champagne Pools, natural rock pools where waves crash over the rocks and fill the pools with bubbling seawater.
After a full day exploring, it’s back to camp for your second and final night.
Day 3 – Lake Wabby & the sand dunes
Your final day takes you to Lake Wabby, but getting there is part of the experience.
You’ll walk across the spectacular Hammerstone Sandblow, surrounded by enormous sand dunes, before reaching the green freshwater lake at the bottom. It’s one of the most unique landscapes on K’gari and a pretty unforgettable way to finish the trip.
After Lake Wabby, it’s time for lunch before making your way back down the beach and catching the ferry to Rainbow Beach.
Is camping on K’gari worth it?
100% yes.
If you’ve never camped before, don’t let that put you off visiting K’gari. You don’t need to be an experienced camper and you’re not being dropped in the middle of the bush and expected to figure everything out yourself.
The campsite, tents and essential camping equipment are already sorted, and you’ll be travelling alongside your group and experienced guides.
Camping is actually one of the things that makes the K’gari experience so memorable. You spend three days swimming in freshwater lakes, driving 4WDs across the sand, exploring rainforests, floating down creeks and hanging out with your new mates before heading back to camp each night.
It might not be five-star accommodation – but when you’re camping just metres from the beach on K’gari, that’s kind of the whole point.
