Q: What is the criteria to participate?

Eligibility & Requirements The Bali Turtle Conservation Volunteer Program is open to participants from a wide range of backgrounds who are passionate about marine conservation and protecting wildlife. No previous conservation or marine biology experience is required. The most important qualities are enthusiasm, teamwork and a genuine interest in protecting the environment. Basic Requirements: Minimum English level: Basic conversational English is required to communicate with coordinators and fellow volunteers. Police Check: A CRB or police background check is required during the signup process. Passport: A valid passport is required for international travel. Experience: No previous conservation or wildlife experience is required. Additional Requirements: A genuine interest in wildlife conservation and marine protection. A reasonable level of physical fitness as the program involves outdoor activities and beach work. Willingness to work in warm and humid weather conditions. Volunteer Program Overview

The Turtle Conservation project is located on the charming island of Nusa Penida.

Work alongside a local team and help protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia. Through this program, you will contribute to protecting the turtle population in Nusa Penida by working at our turtle conservation centre. Depending on the time of the year, you may be identifying turtle species, collecting eggs, monitoring nests, or seeing hatchlings get safely to sea.

We get you ready

Arrive Sunday

Fly into Bali (DPS). We pick you up and get you on the boat to Nusa Penida, where you meet the crew.

Orientation, then turtles

Monday is your project briefing. Then Monday to Friday at the hatchery, on beach clean-ups and conservation work.

Weekends are yours

Snorkel with manta rays, visit Kelingking Beach or head back to mainland Bali. Add onward travel with us at a discount.

PROGRAM INCLUSIONS

Accommodation
Enjoy 13 nights of accommodation in shared standard rooms, staying close to your placement and local amenities. Accommodation is comfortable, clean and social, giving you the chance to relax, connect with fellow volunteers and experience everyday life in Bali.

Arrival Pick Up
You’ll be met on arrival and transferred to your accommodation within the designated pick-up times, making your first day stress-free and easy after landing.

Transportation
All transport required for your volunteering programme is included as per the weekly schedule, ensuring you can travel safely and reliably between your accommodation and program.

Meals
Meals are included throughout your stay, with three good-sized meals provided on weekdays and two meals per day on weekends. Expect a mix of local Bali cuisine and familiar options.

Materials & Tools
All materials, resources and tools required for your placement are provided, so you can focus fully on turtle conservation and rehabilitation.

Training
Receive full training and ongoing supervision from an experienced local coordinator.

Support
You’ll have access to local team support 24/7 throughout your programme, with help always available if you need advice, assistance or reassurance.

Cultural Session
Take part in a Bali cultural lesson and country introduction, designed to help you understand local customs, traditions and daily life before starting your placement.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Join our Bali Turtle Conservation Volunteer Program and help protect endangered sea turtles on the beautiful island of Nusa Penida, just a short boat ride from mainland Bali. This hands-on conservation project allows volunteers to work alongside a dedicated local team committed to protecting turtle populations and preserving Indonesia’s marine ecosystems.

Sea turtles play a vital role in maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems. However, populations across Indonesia face increasing threats from habitat destruction, pollution, illegal poaching and climate change. By volunteering on this program, you will contribute directly to conservation efforts that protect turtle nesting sites, support rehabilitation work and help hatchlings safely reach the ocean.

Working at the local turtle conservation centre, volunteers assist with daily tasks that support turtle care, habitat protection and environmental awareness initiatives. Depending on the season and current conservation priorities, your activities may include identifying turtle species, monitoring nests, collecting eggs, caring for injured turtles or helping release hatchlings into the sea.

What Will I Actually Be Doing?

Volunteers support the local conservation team with daily tasks at the turtle conservation centre and surrounding beaches. Activities are practical and hands-on, allowing you to actively contribute to protecting marine life while learning about sea turtle conservation.

Cleaning and maintaining turtle tanks at the conservation centre
Feeding turtles and collecting seaweed or live food
Monitoring turtle nests and hatcheries
Assisting with turtle hatchling releases when available
Collecting conservation data such as turtle measurements and growth
Cleaning beaches and helping reduce marine pollution
Supporting environmental awareness activities in the local community

The exact tasks may vary depending on the season and conservation priorities. Turtle nesting does not occur year-round, meaning volunteers may participate in different conservation activities throughout the program.

Why Turtle Conservation Matters

Sea turtles are essential to maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. By feeding on seagrass and jellyfish, they help maintain balanced ocean food chains and support coral reef health. However, turtle populations worldwide are under threat from coastal development, illegal harvesting, pollution and fishing gear entanglement.

Protecting sea turtles also supports local communities. Conservation programs create sustainable ecotourism opportunities and encourage environmental awareness, helping protect marine biodiversity for future generations.

Where Will I Live and What Is Daily Life Like?

Volunteers stay on the island of Nusa Penida, a peaceful and scenic island known for its dramatic cliffs, clear waters and relaxed atmosphere. The island offers a more traditional and rural experience compared to mainland Bali, with fewer shops and tourist facilities.

Accommodation is shared with other volunteers and provides a social environment where participants from around the world can connect and share experiences. Meals are provided throughout the program and typically include Indonesian-style dishes.

After volunteering each day, participants often relax by the beach, explore the island, or join social activities organised by the local team. Locations such as Crystal Bay, known for its incredible ocean views, are popular places to visit during free time.

THE ITINERARY

Example Weekly Itinerary

The Turtle Conservation Volunteer Program takes place on the island of Nusa Penida, located approximately 45 minutes by speedboat from mainland Bali. Your airport pick-up and boat transfer to the island will be arranged in advance. Please note that both the airport transfer and the Nusa Penida boat transfer operate on fixed schedules organised by the local team.

Sunday – Arrival
Volunteers arrive in Bali and meet the program transfer before travelling by speedboat to Nusa Penida. Once you arrive on the island you will settle into your accommodation, meet fellow volunteers and receive an introduction to island life before the conservation work begins the following day.
The evening is typically free to relax, explore the nearby beach or get to know the other participants joining the project.

Monday – Project Introduction
Your first day begins with a project briefing and introduction to sea turtle conservation. The local coordinators will explain the importance of the project, the current conservation challenges facing sea turtles in Indonesia and the tasks volunteers will assist with throughout the week.
After the briefing, volunteers begin participating in typical daily activities at the conservation centre such as feeding turtles, cleaning tanks, collecting turtle food and assisting with beach clean-ups.
In the evening, volunteers watch a documentary about sea turtles to gain deeper insight into their behaviour, migration patterns and the importance of protecting their habitats.

Tuesday to Thursday – Conservation Activities

During the week volunteers support the local team with a variety of hands-on conservation tasks designed to improve turtle care and protect the surrounding marine environment.

Feeding turtles and monitoring their health
Cleaning and maintaining turtle tanks
Collecting seaweed and live food for turtles
Making enrichment toys for turtles
Beach clean-ups to reduce pollution
Supporting the care of injured or recovering turtles

On one of these days volunteers will visit Crystal Bay, one of the most beautiful locations on Nusa Penida, known for its crystal-clear waters and incredible coastal views.

On Wednesday evening volunteers usually enjoy beach sports such as volleyball, football or badminton, offering a fun way to relax after a day of conservation work.

Thursday evening features a special beach bonfire welcome and farewell dinner. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the week’s work, welcome new volunteers and say goodbye to participants who are finishing their program.

Friday – Turtle Release and Project Wrap-Up
On Friday morning volunteers continue their regular activities including feeding turtles and maintaining the conservation centre.
Participants who are finishing the program this week may have the opportunity to release rehabilitated turtles back into the ocean if conditions allow. This is often one of the most memorable moments of the program.
Departing volunteers also take part in a feedback session where they can share their experiences and reflections with the project team.

Additional Conservation Activities

Depending on project priorities, volunteers may also assist with additional conservation initiatives throughout the week.

Environmental awareness campaigns in the local community
Construction or maintenance of turtle tanks and conservation facilities
Collecting scientific data on turtle growth and health
Releasing rehabilitated turtles back into the ocean

HOW TO BOOK

Before You Travel

Once your place has been confirmed, you can begin preparing for your volunteer experience in Bali.

Book your international flights to Bali (Denpasar Airport).
Arrange travel insurance and any required visa.
Provide your flight details so the team can organise your airport transfer and boat transfer to Nusa Penida.

Arrival Information

Airport pick-up and your boat transfer to Nusa Penida will be arranged in advance. Transfers operate on scheduled departure times, so it is important that you provide your flight details prior to arrival.

Accommodation begins on Sunday so you can arrive, settle in and prepare for the program which officially starts on Monday.

Recommended Equipment:

There is no mandatory equipment required for this program. However, volunteers should come prepared for outdoor work in tropical conditions.

Personal toiletries and medications

Please note that sunscreen, lotions and mosquito repellents should not be used while handling turtles directly as these products may harm the animals. Volunteers will receive full guidance from local coordinators on safe wildlife handling practices.

Where does the program start and finish?

Our representative driver meets you at the meeting point upon your arrival. Once you have been picked up you will be taken to Sanur harbour where you will meet the transfer coordinator and they will make sure your transfer to Nusa Penida is smooth. Upon arrival in Nusa Penida the coordinator will pick you up and take you to the accommodation. You will then be taken to our TGL Jasmine Accommodation Center in Nusa Penida. This is where your program will start and finish. Whilst on your program you can arrange onwards travel with us.

Who will I be travelling with?

Whether you’re travelling solo or with a mate, you’ll meet like-minded travellers from all over the world. Group sizes vary with each program.

Do I need vaccinations?

Vaccines are recommended for Bali, consult a doctor for personalised advice based on what is best to get before coming. We recommend organising all vaccines at least 4-6 weeks before your trip.

Can I book extra nights?

Who can volunteer?

For this volunteer program we encourage everyone to try volunteering abroad who have a keen interest in culture, community and learning new life skills whilst making a difference. Respect, energy and the adaptability to work in a team and diverse environment is a must.

When is the best time to travel to bali?

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season (April to October) for warm, sunny weather that’s perfect for beaches, sightseeing, and outdoor adventures, with May to September offering the most reliable conditions and lower humidity. The wet season (November to March) brings tropical showers that are often short and heavy, resulting in lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, and better value on accommodation and tours, making it ideal for travellers who prefer a quieter, more affordable trip and don’t mind occasional rain.

Do I need a visa?

Yes, a visa is required for Indonesia. Please ensure you have the right type of visa before arriving to Indonesia. The right type of visa to take part in our programs would be B-211 visa. Please ensure that you apply for the visa type mentioned above, adding Green Lion Bali as the sponsor.

What airport do I fly in and out of?

The main airport in Bali is Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), also known as Denpasar International Airport.

What do I need to bring?

Comfortable shoes. Weather safety clothing such as hat, rain jacket and fleece sweater. Modest clothing for visiting temples. First-aid kit. Small day pack. Reusable water bottle. Work clothing you don’t mind getting dirty. Passport and print off all visa, insurance and vaccinations. Toiletries (insect repellent and sunscreen!).

Can I volunteer with a dietary requirement?

Yes! We do our best to cater to dietary requirements. Make sure at the time of booking you tell us any dietary requirements so we can be prepared.
