Good to Know | FAQs

Every ULTIMATE East Coast tour includes all point-to-point transport between stops and accommodation in hostels along the way. Accommodation comes in a range of styles and budgets, so you can travel cheaply or upgrade the places you stay. What varies between trips is how much is organised for you — a fully guided tour travels with a tour leader and a group the whole way, while a self-guided package has all the same arrangements pre-booked for you to travel at your own pace.

A fully guided tour travels with a tour leader and a group of other travellers from start to finish — it’s the most popular choice, because you know from the day you book that you’ll be travelling with other people. A self-guided package has exactly the same transport and accommodation pre-booked for you, but you travel independently between stops and set your own pace. Either way you’re never organising it yourself.

Self-guided doesn’t mean you’re always alone. Any experience included in a self-guided package — K’gari, the Whitsundays, day trips — runs as a fully guided two or three day component with a guide and a group.

Most run Sydney to Cairns; some depart from Brisbane or Melbourne instead, also finishing in Cairns.

Ultimate’s East Coast tours range from 21 days (3 Week Highlights) to 50 days (7 Week Explorer), depending on the route and number of stops.

Self-guided East Coast packages start from $1,899 for 26 days, and fully guided group tours start from $3,909 for 21 days. Prices are per person and depend on trip length and how many stops are included. A $300 deposit secures your place, with the balance due 45 days before departure.

Yes. We run a female-only East Coast departure (36 days) for travellers who prefer an all-female group environment. It follows the same major highlights as our standard tours with the added comfort of travelling alongside other women. Prices start from $5,599 AUD.

Yes — use our East Coast Package builder to mix and match stops, add extra nights, or tailor the route to your travel dates and interests. You can also book a free travel planning session with our team for a fully personalised recommendation.

Australia’s East Coast is a year-round destination, but many travellers prefer the drier, milder months (roughly April to October) for the northern stops like Cairns and the Whitsundays, and the warmer months (October to March) for Sydney, Melbourne, and Byron Bay. Our travel planning team can help you pick departure dates that match the weather and events you’re after.

Self-guided packages start from $1,899, and fully guided group tours start from $319, depending on trip length and number of stops. All prices are a “from” rate per person.

Three weeks is the realistic minimum to get from Sydney to the Great Barrier Reef. Our East Coast trips run from 21 days up to 50 days depending on route and number of stops. Under three weeks you’re choosing between the reef and the coastal stops rather than doing both; five weeks or more lets you add Victoria or extra time in the Whitsundays without rushing.

East Coast Essentials is the cheapest, at $1,899 for 26 days from Sydney to Cairns. It’s self-guided, so accommodation and transport are included but you travel at your own pace without a tour leader. If you want a guided group tour, the lowest price is $3,909 for the 21-day East Coast Highlights.

March to May and September to November are the sweet spot — warm water, fewer crowds and the best availability. It’s the window most travellers pick.

December to February is peak season: the hottest beaches and the busiest hostels. Book two to three months ahead, because the best dorms and tours sell out first.

June to August is the value window. It’s cooler down south but still tropical up north, where Cairns and the Whitsundays are at their best — and it brings the lowest prices and the easiest bookings.

Whichever months you pick, the Whitsundays boats and K’gari 4WD tours sell out earliest, so locking in your start date is what holds your spot.

People book up to 12 months ahead, holding their place with a $300 deposit. The final balance generally isn’t due until 50 days before travel, so booking early costs you nothing beyond the deposit while giving you the best pick of dates, accommodation and activities. In peak season, December to February, two to three months ahead is the practical minimum — and the Whitsundays boats and K’gari 4WD tours are the first things to go at any time of year.

East Coast tours are for travellers aged 18 to 35, and groups are a mix of solo travellers, pairs and friends from around the world. Most people book solo, so you won’t be the only one. On a fully guided tour you’re with the same group throughout; on a self-guided package you’ll meet groups on the guided components like K’gari and the Whitsundays.

Generally yes — the daily cost drops as trips get longer, because the fixed costs spread further. The 21-day Highlights has the highest daily rate of any East Coast trip; the 43-day Explorer + and the 50-day Melbourne to Cairns are among the lowest. Compare total price against days rather than headline price alone, since a cheaper trip that’s two weeks shorter can work out dearer per day.

Yes — the Trip Builder lets you build a custom East Coast trip and get an instant quote in minutes. You choose where you start, which stops you make and how many nights at each, the standard of accommodation, and which activities to add. It’s the same transport network and the same hostels as our set trips — you’re just deciding the shape of it.

The Trip Builder offers four accommodation levels: Basic, Ultimate Value, Flashpacker and Private. You pick the level that suits your budget, and you can mix them along the route — travel cheaply through some stops and upgrade where you want a bit more comfort. Every option includes your transport between stops as part of the included Travel Pass.

ABOUT THE EAST COAST

Australia’s East Coast is where road trips turn into stories you’ll be telling for years to come. Running from Sydney all the way up to Cairns, this legendary route is loaded with laid-back beach towns, world-class surf breaks, buzzing cities, island hideaways, hidden waterfalls, rainforest trails, and everything in between.

At Ultimate, we take care of the logistics so you can focus on the adventure. No stressing over transport, accommodation, or what to do next — just more freedom, more unforgettable moments, and more stories worth bringing home. This is your trip, your way, made effortless.

Top East Coast Australia Experiences
  • Sydney – Catch a wave at Bondi Beach, watch the sun set behind the Sydney Opera House, and hit the trails through the Blue Mountains.
  • Byron Bay – Slow the pace right down and soak up the laid-back charm of this beloved coastal escape.
  • Brisbane – Discover Queensland’s capital through its museums, markets, botanic gardens, and the islands and national parks just a short trip away.
  • K’gari (Fraser Island) – Camp under the stars, hike through ancient forest, swim in freshwater lakes, and cruise the beach highway in a 4WD on the world’s largest sand island.
  • Whitsundays – Sail across impossibly blue waters between postcard-perfect islands in one of Australia’s most stunning tropical playgrounds.
  • Cairns – Dive or snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, then trade the reef for ancient rainforest and cascading waterfalls the very next day.
Why Go Fully Guided?

The East Coast has so much packed into it that going it alone often means missing the best parts — or losing hours to planning instead of exploring. Going fully guided with Ultimate means every transfer, stop, and activity is sorted before you even land, so you spend your time living the trip, not organizing it.

You’ll travel with a crew who know the route inside out, from the best lookout for that sunrise photo to the local secrets most visitors never find. You’ll also have a built-in group of fellow travelers, turning solo trips into instant friendships and shared adventures. And with everything from accommodation to activities bundled in, there are no surprise costs or last-minute scrambles — just a seamless journey from Sydney to Cairns, taken care of from start to finish.
