Example Weekly Itinerary
Volunteers at the Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuary typically assist with elephant care and conservation activities Monday to Friday. Each day combines hands-on work with the elephants, learning from experienced mahouts and gaining insight into ethical elephant conservation practices in Thailand.
Sunday Arrival
Participants arrive into Chiang Mai and transfer to the volunteer accommodation near the sanctuary. After settling in, you will have time to meet other volunteers, explore the surrounding area and prepare for the program beginning the following day.
The evening is typically relaxed, allowing volunteers to rest after travel and get familiar with the sanctuary environment.
Monday Orientation & Elephant Introduction
Your first day begins with breakfast followed by an introduction session covering program expectations, sanctuary guidelines and health and safety procedures. You will also learn about the history of elephants in Thailand and the mission of the sanctuary.
After orientation, volunteers are introduced to the elephants and learn about their individual stories and personalities. In the afternoon you may help prepare traditional Thai herbal medicine and nutritional supplements used to support elephant health.
The day usually ends with a shared dinner and time to relax with fellow volunteers.
Tuesday Sanctuary Work & Elephant Care
Volunteers assist with maintaining the elephant living areas and supporting the sanctuary team. Activities may include cleaning the elephant habitat, helping maintain the grounds and observing the elephants during their mud bath sessions.
Mud baths are an important part of elephant health, helping protect their skin and regulate body temperature.
Wednesday Nutrition & Elephant Enrichment
Volunteers help prepare special nutrition balls made from fruit, grains and herbs that support the elephants’ dietary needs. These enrichment activities also help keep the elephants stimulated and engaged.
During the afternoon you may assist with maintaining the sanctuary grounds or spend time observing elephant behaviour and learning from the mahouts about their care routines.
Thursday Mahout Skills & Jungle Walk
On Thursday volunteers learn basic mahout skills and gain insight into how caretakers communicate with elephants. This session provides a deeper understanding of elephant behaviour and how trust is built between elephants and their caretakers.
Later in the day volunteers may accompany the elephants on a walk through the sanctuary’s natural forest environment while observing their natural behaviours.
Friday Feeding & Behaviour Observation
The final working day focuses on feeding and observing the elephants. Volunteers assist with preparing food and feeding the elephants while learning about their dietary needs.
You will also have the opportunity to observe elephant behaviour and discuss conservation challenges with the sanctuary team.
The day typically concludes with a group reflection session where volunteers can share their experiences and learn more about elephant conservation in Thailand.
Evenings & Free Time
Evenings are generally free for volunteers to relax, socialise with other participants or explore the surrounding area. Chiang Mai is known for its temples, markets and vibrant food scene, making it a great place to explore during your stay.
