Am I eligible for an Australia Working Holiday Visa?
Australia offers two working holiday visa types: the subclass 417 (Working Holiday) and subclass 462 (Work and Holiday). Eligibility depends on your passport. You must generally be aged 18–30 (or 18–35 for some countries), hold a passport from an eligible country, and meet health and character requirements. Check the full eligibility list on our Working Holiday Visa page.
How far ahead should I book?
UltimateOz departures book out quickly. We recommend booking as early as possible. You can secure your spot with a non-refundable 20% deposit, with the balance due 6 weeks before departure.
What do I need to plan before I leave?
Four essentials: apply for your Working Holiday Visa, book flights to Australia, arrange backpacker travel insurance, and open an Australian bank account — we help you set this up before you arrive.
I’m travelling alone. Will I meet people?
Yes. The majority of UltimateOz travellers arrive solo. Your first week is designed specifically to help you make friends fast. Most people stay in touch with their group for the rest of their trip. Connect before you travel via our Facebook community.
What happens after I book?
You’ll receive a booking confirmation and pre-departure info by email. Once you’ve booked flights, send us your flight number and we’ll handle the rest, including airport pickup.
How do you help me find work?
Every UltimateOz package includes a 12-month membership to Travellers At Work (TAW), Australia’s leading working holiday job database. During your first week we run a work orientation session covering where to find jobs, how to apply and expected pay rates. You can also book one-on-one sessions with our in-house work experts who will review and Australianise your CV.
Where can I live in Australia?
There are no restrictions on where working holiday makers can live. Most people base themselves in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. Your first week’s accommodation is included in UltimateOz packages. We then help you find shared accommodation, with furnished options averaging AU$175–$350 per person per week.
How do I qualify for a second year Working Holiday Visa?
To extend your visa for a second year, you must complete 88 days (3 months) of specified work in a regional area of Australia. Eligible work includes farm work, fishing, construction and more. Our team can help you find regional work through Travellers At Work.
How do I apply for a tax refund in Australia?
As a working holidaymaker, you may be eligible for a tax refund when you leave Australia. You may also be able to claim your superannuation back — a compulsory employer contribution of around 11.5% of your wages. Our tax refund partners help you claim the maximum refund.
What is Medicare and am I eligible?
Medicare is Australia’s public health system. Working holiday makers from the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Netherlands and Belgium are eligible for Medicare for the duration of their visa. Citizens of Malta and Italy are covered for 6 months. All other nationalities are not eligible — which is why valid travel insurance is essential for every working holiday maker.
How much money should I bring to Australia?
We recommend arriving with at least AU$5,000 to cover your first weeks before you start earning. The local currency is Australian Dollars (AUD). As part of your UltimateOz package, we’ll help you set up an Australian bank account before you arrive.
