Cross into the Northern Territory to marvel at the towering cliffs of Kings Canyon, feel the spiritual presence of Uluru, and explore the sacred domes of Kata Tjuta. Along the way, your guide will share stories that reveal the true heartbeat of the outback.
ABOUT YOU
This trip is made for adventurous travellers aged 18–35 who want to experience Australia beyond the well-worn tourist trail. It’s perfect if you’re happy camping, love the outdoors, and don’t mind a little dust on your boots in return for unforgettable moments. Whether you’re travelling solo, ticking off a bucket-list adventure, or seeking a deeper connection with nature and Country, you’ll feel right at home. A moderate level of fitness is needed, along with a flexible mindset and a willingness to pitch in with camp life. If you’re looking for hotels, late starts, and luxury comforts, this probably isn’t for you. But if wide-open spaces, meaningful travel, and epic shared experiences are what you’re chasing, this tour was designed with you in mind.
TRAVEL STYLE
This is a hands-on camping experience, so guests are expected to take part in simple daily tasks such as helping with meal preparation and packing up camp. Accommodation is a mix of national parks, bush campgrounds, and one night in shared dorm-style accommodation in Coober Pedy. Most campgrounds have basic toilet and shower facilities, with the exception of Warren Gorge, which does not offer showers. While camping, you’ll sleep in a traditional Australian swag—a durable canvas bedroll with a built-in mattress—set up under the stars or inside wet-weather tents when required. Swag upgrade: If you’d like extra comfort, you can upgrade to a deluxe double swag for $300, sleeping up to two people. This option includes a high-density foam mattress and mesh windows for added ventilation. Availability is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Sleeping bags: Please bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. Alternatively, a used sleeping bag can be hired during the booking process for $20. All unused or retired sleeping bags are donated to a homeless charity, giving them a second life. Weather conditions: Guests should be prepared for extreme and changing weather, including high and low temperatures and exposure to the elements. In wet conditions, shared group tents will be provided for shelter.
GROUP VIBE
Groups are small, friendly, and made up of travellers from all over the world, with plenty of solo travellers on every departure. The atmosphere is adventurous, relaxed, and community-focused. Days are spent exploring incredible landscapes together, while evenings are all about shared meals, campfire conversations, and sleeping beneath stars you won’t find anywhere else. Some nights are low-key and restful after long days on the road, while others are filled with laughter and story-sharing with your crew. Between long drives, remote camps, and shared experiences, bonds form quickly — and you’ll walk away with real friendships, not just names in your contacts.
THE CAMPING EXPERIENCE
CAMPING & ACCOMMODATION
This adventure is built around camping and spending real time in Australia’s wild and remote landscapes. Accommodation is a mix of national parks, eco-campgrounds, and one underground camping experience in Coober Pedy — giving you front-row access to places most travellers never get to experience.
This is a participatory camping tour. Everyone helps out with simple tasks like setting up swags, packing down camp, and assisting with meal preparation. It’s all part of the experience and creates the shared, social vibe these trips are known for.
SWAG CAMPING
You’ll sleep in a traditional Aussie swag — a durable canvas bed roll with a built-in mattress. Swags are set up under the stars whenever conditions allow, or inside shared weather tents if needed. It’s simple, comfortable, and one of the most authentic ways to experience the Australian outdoors.
Please note: swags are ground-based bedding, so you’ll need to be comfortable getting up and down from ground level.
FACILITIES
Most campsites offer basic facilities, including toilets and showers.
In wet or extreme weather, shared group tents will be provided for shelter. If conditions are unsafe or significantly impact the camping experience, alternative accommodation may be arranged. Any additional costs will be shared 50/50 between Untamed Escapes and guests.
WHAT TO BRING
Sleeping bags and pillows are not included. Please bring your own, or you can hire a used sleeping bag for $20 during the booking process. All retired or unused sleeping bags are donated to a homeless charity, giving them a second life.
Australia’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in remote regions. Be prepared for hot days, cool nights, wind, and exposure to the elements. Full packing recommendations will be provided before departure.
IS THIS CAMPING FOR YOU?
If you’re keen to sleep under the stars, embrace simplicity, and be part of a shared outdoor experience, you’ll love this trip. If you’re looking for private rooms, daily hot showers, or hotel-style comfort, this tour may not be the right fit — and that’s okay. This adventure is about immersion, connection, and experiencing Australia the way it’s meant to be seen.
